This guide is for players who changed the name on their own account. Before you start, have three things ready: access to the Microsoft account email you use for Xbox, your current gamertag, and a rough idea of when you made the change (even the year helps).

Why People Lose Track of Their Old Gamertag

When you change your gamertag, Xbox applies the new name everywhere and your Gamerscore, achievements and friends stay with the account. That is convenient, but it also means the old name simply stops appearing. Friends see the new name on their list automatically, so nobody is reminded of the old one, and after a few months or years it is easy to forget exactly what it was.

The account itself does not change: your Microsoft account and its Xbox ID stay the same. Only the label on top is different. That is why the methods below start from things tied to your account, such as purchases and emails, rather than from the Xbox profile page.

Method 1: Check Your Microsoft Account and Receipts

For an old xbox gamertag lookup, this step will not show you the old name, but it can tell you when you changed it. Knowing the date makes Methods 2 and 3 much faster, because you can search for things from before that day.

1. Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in with the Microsoft account you use for Xbox.
2. Open your order history (under Billing / Payment & billing).
3. Look for a purchase that matches a gamertag change. Xbox usually allows one free change and charges for later ones (see how much it costs to change your gamertag), so a paid change should leave a dated receipt. A free change may leave no receipt at all.
4. Write down the date. Everything you find from before that date was probably made under the old name.

Method 2: Search Your Email for Old Xbox Messages

Emails from Xbox and Microsoft often address you by your gamertag at the time they were sent. Your inbox is a dated record of the names you have used.

1. Open the email account linked to your Microsoft account.
2. Search for senders such as Xbox or Microsoft. In Gmail you can use something like from:xbox before:2024/01/01, and Outlook has a similar search box.
3. Open the oldest messages you can find, such as welcome emails, subscription or Game Pass receipts, family invites and achievement or friend notifications.
4. Check the greeting and the account details in each message. If the name differs from your current gamertag, you have found a previous one. The date on that email tells you roughly when you used it.

Method 3: Check Old Captures, Clips and Linked Accounts

Your old gamertag may still exist in things you made while you used it.

1. Your own captures. Open the Captures section in the Xbox app (PC or mobile) or on your console and look at screenshots and clips from before your change date. Party lists, scoreboards and profile cards in the image often show the name.
2. Other places you posted it. Check Discord servers, Twitch or YouTube descriptions, forum signatures, Reddit posts and game communities where you shared your gamertag.
3. Friends. Your friends list updates to your new name on its own, so friends will not see the old one on Xbox. They may still remember it, or have old messages and screenshots in apps outside Xbox.

Method 4: Contact Xbox Support for Older Changes

If the first three methods turn up nothing, Xbox Support is the remaining option. Xbox does not publish a way to view your previous gamertags, and we have not found an official statement that Support will share one. Treat this as a last attempt, not a guaranteed fix. Whether Support can tell you anything is Microsoft’s decision.

1. Open Xbox Support and sign in with the same Microsoft account you use on Xbox.
2. Start a chat or support request and explain that you want to find a gamertag you used in the past.
3. Give them your current gamertag, the approximate date of the change (from Method 1) and why you need the name, for example a support ticket or proof that a clip is yours.
4. Be ready to confirm that the account is yours. Support may ask you to prove ownership before it discusses any account details.

Can You Get the Old Gamertag Back?

Only if nobody else is using it. After you change your gamertag, the old name can become available to other players, so it is not reserved for you. Since 2019 Xbox also allows several players to share the same name by adding a # and a number after it, as explained in Xbox Wire’s announcement. That means a popular name may still be claimable, but with a suffix.
